Tales from our Electrical World
We live in an electromagnetic world. From electrified clouds to a magnetic earth, to an all-pervading fundamental frequency of around 10 Hz found in both humans and the earth. These articles are hoped to give the general public a greater awareness of the electromagnetic world around us and electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in general. Episode I - Hello Electricity, Meet Humanity Around 1650, Otto von Guericke discovered that rotating a sulpher ball on a shaft generated a static electric charge. From this came friction machines that gave the world insight into the world of electricity. Fast forward almost a hundred years and an exciting new development has happened. The year is 1746. A new craze was developing. Had they really captured lightning in a bottle? Electricity had arrived. It could now be stored. People were lining up to experience the pleasure of electricity. Electromania was taking over large parts of Germany, England, France, Holland and Italy. Soon it would be heading to America. Hundreds of people would join hands in a large circle and the leader using his new device, would complete the circuit by touching the device that was held in the hand of the other person. Suddenly a rush of this “electric fluid” would be sent and everyone could feel the shock. This was a device called the Leyden jar. The news travelled almost as fast as electricity. Soon people clamoured to purchase the Ingenhousz bottle. This portable device was created so that everyone could purchase “at a reasonable cost” and enjoy the pleasure of electricity at their leisure. These people were not much different than the people of today who also clamour for the use of a portable electrical device for their leisure – the smartphone.
